SLASSCOM Chairman coordinates the presidential task force on IT

 

Under the guidance of President Mahinda Rajapaksa a presidential task force has been set up to drive widespread adoption of English and IT in the country. Dr Sarath Amunugama, Minister of Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion has been appointed as the Chairman of the new Presidential Task Force on English and IT. The task force has been mandated to improve the knowledge of English and IT of youth and school children with a long-term objective of providing necessary skills to meet future demands. The task force consists of two sub task forces in English and IT respectively.

SLASSCOM Chairman, an established industry veteran Mr. Ranjit Fernando has been appointed to coordinate the IT track and Mr. Sunimal Fernando, Advisor to the President has been appointed to coordinate the English track. The task force also comprises of 20 senior state and private sector officials who will contribute their expertise to the national effort.

The Presidential Task Force will be responsible for the planning, designing and direct implementation of programmes for the improvement of English and IT among youth and school children by coordinating with the respective ministries and relevant government agencies. It will seek to install the infrastructure within and enhance the capacity of the mainstream school system to ensure that school leavers throughout the country by the end of 2010 at either O’ level or the A’ level will possess English and basic IT skills demanded by the job market. The task force will also be responsible for the launch of the "Year of English and IT" by H.E. the President in 2009.
